Holiday Weekend!

May 27th, 2008

EJ and I, as mentioned by about every single morning, afternoon, and news show, took a stay-cation.  It was really fun!  After having the busiest week ever with every parent in town, we needed a break from everyone except ourselves.  Well, on Saturday we went fishing with 10 people, but that we pre-planned.  I didn’t catch any keepers, but I caught a pretty big fluke!

So Saturday was Sheephead Bay, Sunday was a short bus ride to Mitsuwa , a great big Asian market in NJ.  There was a specialty food fair going on, so we enjoyed takoyaki (octopus balls - so good) and black sesame ice cream and other tasty things.  We brought all kinds of fun things home.

We finally watched Juno - it was good, but the girl’s dialog was a little overwhelming sometimes, but o how I love the soundtrack!

Then Brighton Beach, snacking on Russian meats and cheeses, getting really burned (I’m having a little trouble walking…).  Yay weekend!  Now back to real life of blogging, applying for jobs, and turning the TV off when Rachel Ray comes on.  Which is now.

An example of a day in Seattle…

May 22nd, 2008

So Portland and Seattle were wonderful!  Brian and Justin hosted is in Portland and it was fabulous to hang out - we had a fabulous dinner at Le Pigeon (mmm, duck marmalade and trail mix), a tour of the wineries (mmm), cooked out (thanks to Brian’s garden - I want a garden!), hiked (pictures to come), and had a general good time.

Seattle was good, too - here’s an example of one day:
-Breakfast at the hotel - muffins, etc.
-Pike’s Market - Piroshkys, then donuts, then chowder and crab rolls, then oysters and beer…
-Bahn Mi snack
-Vietnamese appetizers at “the best” in Seattle
-Szechuan dungenous crab (bigger than my head) and dan dan noodles

I was full.

This week…

February 27th, 2008

My mom keeps going to these wedding fairs/bridal extravaganzas and entering me in all the drawings.  So far I’ve won: $100 gift certificate to beauty brands, a white salad bowl from Halls and a pair of silver salad servers.  Generally, these fairs are free.  I think she should do this for a long time after my wedding, too.

I need to involve her more in the planning, although there hasn’t been a lot of planning lately.  I’ll send her an email.

Last weekend was Wilco in New Haven.  I got to see Erinn, and she got to meet EJ, and we waited in line for New Haven pizza.  It was pretty tasty, (but I think I prefer Lucali’s).   We made it on the late train and were asleep by 2:00.  And we had front row tickets!!!  Up close, super stars look a little tired and sickly.  I was most impressed by the new-ish guitarist, Nells, because he was awesome, and I am not usually impressed by such things.

Grr.

December 6th, 2007

I sat next to a guy with a birdcage today in the subway. He told me he had 8 birds and wanted 8 more. Nice. Then he started to whistle along with his headphones. Not nice.

It’s 2:30am

December 3rd, 2007

And one of the last nights of the semester that will warrant these hours.  That’s good, but it’s still 2:30 am.  I’m working on a paper on expatriates and the services they need to be successful.  I think I’d like to help out with that in a big, international company.  Sounds like fun, perhaps I’ll look into it.

EJ and I got a Christmas tree yesterday, and it is very cute.   It’s a real tree (which reminds me I need to water it!), which is like we had at home - although here we bought it from the guy on the corner and in KC we went to he tree farm and sawed it down ourselves.

It also snowed today, so perfect timing.  The top two weirdest snow experiences ever: when an inch layer of ice was on top of 4 inches of snow - my sled wouldn’t go through the ice, so you could ride for ages with just a little hill or push.  When it snowed really big flakes for a few hours when I was golfing in high school.

My opinion of the day: social work students are actually really busy.

A little bird told me to BLOG dam$%#!

November 30th, 2007

A little bird also told me that I’m getting married! Woo!

EJ and I just got back from Iceland, which was a lot of fun (for now, see facebook for some pictures). I ate Rudolph, and he was good. But before we left, EJ found the time to check (and read) all (yes, all) of my past blog entries from perfecttaco.blogspot.com. 1) Wow, EJ should do more work at work and 2) Sad, I need to blog and 3) My blogs seem to reflect my life, especially work life (duh, but it is interesting).

So here I restart my blogging (not ironic that I do it at the busiest time of year-2 pretty tough 7-page papers due on Tuesday), but that procrastination workshop was really boring, anyway.

1 not so deep thought: I saw a whole box of hamster equipment (ball, box, shavings) out on the sidewalk. Always kinds of sad, because someone’s pet died.

1 social work thought: So, only the good teachers bring this up, and only after you’ve been in school for awhile…But social work, it’s history, even today is a lot about social control. Hmm. Won’t go into depth, but I am thinking about it a lot lately.

Good night for now - here’s a picture of me and EJ. (Why does my head look so fat?)

August 1st, 2007

So, in case you missed it, as I would have if I hadn’t been watching sports center over Ej’s head, last night had the potential, all on the same day to:

-Tom Glavin getting 300 wins (probably won’t have another situation like this in decades, may be ever)
-A-Rod hitting 500 home runs (I don’t think he’s thirty yet)
-Barry Bonds (he had to get 2) breaking Hank Aaron’s home run record

Three big ones they tell me. So, in case you think there is nothing on TV, tune in to the Yankees or the Giants or the Mets on Sunday when Glavine gets another try.

Wow - who turned me into a sports fan?

The weekend and a little of today (and why can’t I paste things uniformally?)

July 23rd, 2007

The weekend:

-Vox Trot at the Siren festival – again, wonderful people watching and sticking to the lesser know band is always a plus (they were against MIA on the other stage)

-Dylan had a flea! (cue Frontline commercial with singing pups, “there may be bugs…”)

-Risotto success

-Ej likes Flight of the Conchords

-We will soon attempt to swim at the Y

-Lukali’s pizza is still wonderfully fabulous. Mmm.

-It’s raining today, I slipped. People are nice, though at ask you if you are okay and one apologized, apparently for the sidewalk being wet and me wearing the wrong shoes. Nice of her, though

The second Friday of the week…

July 6th, 2007

…is going very slooooowly. I forget what it is like to be at a computer all day (for those who knew, last school year I did not have a computer at my desk). The cubicle depression is slowly passing, which is good. I have gotten into the habit of jogging during lunch in the nearby park, which is very admirable of me, if I may say so myself. I’ve actually gone 2 times this week and 3 times last week. I’m so unmotivated to do anything, it is even hard to blog, so sad.
